Jameis Winston Looking to Trademark “Famous Jameis”

The likely top pick in the 2015 NFL draft is venturing into a world very few have traveled in the past. No, we aren’t talking about the National Football League itself.

Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is applying to trademark the term “Famous Jameis.”

Winston’s reps confirmed the news to ESPN’s Darren Rovell (h/t CBS Sports).

We have begun taking steps to protect our client and his intellectual property rights,” Russ Spielman of The Legacy Agency said. “Right now, his sole focus is on football. We hope to utilize this way down the line.

It’s good that Spielman would make a point of indicating that Winston’s sole focus is on football. We know how people tend to overreact in today’s world.

The trademark likely stems from a cookie company potentially looking to do the same thing with the term.

This isn’t anything new around the NFL. Johnny Manziel previously trademarked “Johnny Cleveland,” while Robert Griffin III did the same with “RGIII.”

Insert first-round bust joke here.

In any event, Winston’s already thinking of the business side of the game. If nothing else, I guess that’s a good thing.
