Gregg Popovich will not Coach in July if NBA Extends the Season

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, never afraid to stir up the pot, made headlines recently when discussing the potential of the NBA extending its season.

The headline reads:

Pop will not go to work in July should the NBA decide to further extend the regular season.

I think the season is long enough, Popovich said. “I will not come to work in July. If there’s a game in July, count me out.”

The future Hall of Fame head coach continued:

Count me out. Count me out. Life is too short.

This has to be a widespread belief around the Association. As currently formatted, the NBA season (including training camp and the playoffs) goes from October to June. Extending it into July would give coaches and players just two full months off.

At 66, Pop isn’t about that action.

The primary reason the NBA is looking to either extend or shorten the season is to avoid the hectic schedule we see today. For example, the Golden State Warriors have had multiple stretches of three games in four days since January.

However, extending the season seems to make little sense.
