Darrelle Revis Signs with the Jets

According to agent, free agent cornerback Darrelle Revis has agreed to return to the New York Jets a day after the New England Patriots declined to pick up his option for the 2015 season.

Revis, 29, is considered one of the top defensive backs in the NFL. He has earned six Pro Bowl appearances in eight seasons in the league. He’s also coming off a 2014 campaign that saw him record 50 tackles, 16 passes defended and two interceptions en-route to a Super Bowl title.

While the terms of the deal are not yet known, Revis was said to be asking for $40 million guaranteed on a long-term deal. It seems like that Jets were willing to top that.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft by these very same Jets, Revis was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to the 2013 season. Following one year in Tampa, the All-Pro signed on with New England.

It’s an interesting move for a number of reasons. The Jets finished 14th in the NFL against the pass last season, but allowed 31 touchdowns compared to six interceptions in the process.

As a true shutdown guy, Revis adds a completely different dimension to a defense that has relied on its front seven for far too long.

Update: Terms of the deal are ridiculous. Revis gets a five-year contract worth $70 million with $39 million guaranteed.
