Could the Green Bay Packers be Interested in Wes Welker?

Free agent wide receiver Wes Welker did not draw any interest on the open market during the first week of the new league year.

However, reports are surfacing that the Green Bay Packers may have an interest in investing in the 34-year-old slot receiver.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport had this to say about a possible Welker-Green Bay matchup.

One team to watch for him, the Green Bay Packers. They’re looking in the receiver market, not going to want to spend a lot of money. And of course for Wes Welker, he’d love to play for another big-time quarterback. Just like he did with Tom Brady, just like he did with Peyton Manning.

Should the Packers end up signing the concussion-prone receiver, he would sit in a pile of depth after lead receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Welker would have to fight his way through Davante Adams in order to see the field as a No. 3 receiver.

Coming off the worst statistical campaign of his nine-year career , Welker only tallied 464 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2014. It doesn’t take a genius to see why Welker, who has battled multiple concussions over the past couple of seasons, has not attracted much attention as a free agent.

It will be interesting to see if this idea gains steam moving forward. Considering Welker has played with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning during his career, Aaron Rodgers seems to be the next logical choice for the smallish receiver to catch passes from.
