Colts in No Rush to Negotiate a New Contract for Andrew Luck

With two years remaining on his rookie contract, the Indianapolis Colts don’t seem to be in a hurry to sign franchise quarterback Andrew Luck to a lucrative long-term extension.

Colts’ owner Jim Irsay explained the team’s plans regarding Luck’s deal (via ESPN).

Andrew still has two years left, and whatever our talks are between Andrew and his people will remain confidential. I really think most likely the scenario is going into the offseason next year is when that second contract will come up. That’s the vision I have right now.

Luck’s deal differs from that of Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson, also drafted in 2012. Wilson is currently in the midst of negotiating a lucrative contract extension since his four-year, rookie deal is only good through 2015.

In addition to retaining Luck for two more years, Irsay also said the Colts’ priority is to keep young pass catchers Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen and T.Y. Hilton with the team.

It has long been considered that Luck will receive the largest contract in league history, but he might have to wait until 2016 to see that payday.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for the former No. 1 overall pick. If he’s able to let Russell Wilson set the market this offseason, Luck will be able to best that contract next year.
