Tennessee Volunteers Football Player Indicted on Rape Charges

University of Tennessee cornerback Michael Williams was indicted by a grand jury on rape charges on Thursday. Also indicted was former Tennessee linebacker A.J. Johnson by the same Knox County grand jury.

The rape investigation, which surrounded these former teammates, began back in November. It stems from a 19-year-old University of Tennessee student claiming she was raped at Williams’ residence—an alleged ordeal that she indicated lasted 45 minutes.

Both players were immediately suspended from the football program after reports surfaced of the allegations. Johnson’s eligibility has since run out. Williams remains enrolled at Tennessee, but his long-term future is obviously up in the air right now.

According to Williams’ attorney, he was booked on the charges and released on $40,000 bail. As it relates to Johnson, plans are being made for his surrender to authorities.
