Report: Packers not Focused on Randall Cobb Right Now

The Green Bay Packers have a couple high-value free agents set to hit the open market next month. While most of the attention has been on star receiver Randall Cobb, CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora is reporting that the team is more focused on retaining offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga right now.

Green Bay reportedly has concern that the market for Cobb is “likely to get out of hand.” That’s not too much of a surprise considering the Pro Bowl campaign he put up in 2014. Cobb caught 91 passes for nearly 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season. Equally as impressive, he brought in 72 percent of the passes thrown in his direction.

With Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas likely to receive the franchise tag in the coming weeks, there is a good chance that Cobb will be the best available receiver on the free agent market come March 10th. That’s likely going to increase his market a great deal, especially with wide receiver-needy teams possessing a ton of cap space.

It was previously reported that Cobb was looking for $9 million per season—a number that could be on the low end if the market plays out as expected.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson prepared his team for the potential loss of Cobb by selecting Davante Adams in the second round of the 2014 draft. While inconsistent throughout his rookie campaign, the Fresno State product tallied 38 receptions for 446 yards and three scores in 2014. He’s viewed internally as a starter-caliber receiver opposite Jordy Nelson.

Cobb’s market should include the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, among many other teams. Depending on those who show interest, he could very well be looking at a long-term deal valued at over $10 million per season.
