Report: Carolina Panthers Officially Parting Ways With Greg Hardy

Greg Hardy is certain to have a few suitors when he officially hits free agency on March 10, but the defensive end’s current team has removed itself as one.

According to Bill Voth of the Black and Blue Review, the Carolina Panthers are preparing to distance themselves from Hardy, who is still awaiting potential discipline from the NFL for his role in a domestic violence case.

[S]ome momentum did build for a Hardy return in the days after his legal situation was cleared up. But, sources say, that slim possibility quickly cooled and eventually ended last week.

The 26-year-old last played a full season in 2013 and tallied 15.0 sacks, following up an 11-sack performance in 2012. However, Hardy spent most of 2014 on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. He appeared in a single game, registering four total tackles and one sack.

It’s safe to assume Hardy has plenty left to contribute, and his charges were dropped in early February after the witness “intentionally made herself unavailable to the State,” per ESPN’s David Newton.

The biggest, question, however is if another franchise is willing to accept the backlash sure to come along with inking Hardy to a deal.

For example, the Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals both employ 4-3 fronts and have the necessary cap space required to potentially sign Hardy.

Carolina will receive a compensatory pick for the 2016 NFL draft if and when Hardy signs elsewhere.
