Report: Broncos Prepared to Use Franchise Tag on Demaryius Thomas

According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Denver Broncos will use their franchise tag on star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas if the two sides are not able to come to an agreement on a contract.

Although there has reportedly been no recent contract talks between Thomas and the team, applying the franchise tag on Thomas would cost the Broncos approximately $13 million under the cap. Along with the star pass catcher, tight end Julius Thomas is an impending free agent. The cost to franchise Demaryius could impact the team’s ability to retain Julius on a long-term deal.

However with aging slot receiver Wes Welker contemplating retirement, perhaps the dream of keeping both the Thomas’ around may not be totally out of the question.

For his part, Demaryius Thomas has been amazing over the past three seasons—accumulating 4,400 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns during that span. The $13 million price tag to keep him from joining another team seems well worth it.
