Josh McCown Has Plans to Embrace the Mentoring Role with Johnny Manziel

At 35 years old, newly signed Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown is definitely not the long-term solution for the team. However, he will provide a source of stability until 2014 first-round pick Johnny Manziel matures in his role with the team.

General manager Ray Farmer called McCown a “great guy in the locker room” who “will be great for the quarterback room.”

Speaking specifically about Manziel, the new Browns quarterback said he wants to “embrace the role of mentoring Johnny.”

In addition to that, McCown had this to say:

Just life in general is too short to go through it alone or just looking out for yourself all the time. So if you can give up yourself to others to help someone else in their journey, I just think you’ll find so much more peace in life. So that’s my approach when I head into a quarterback room. It’s just what can I give back to the guys around me to help us be better? Because ultimately it’s going to help our team.

Johnny is a person, and every person that I come across has value to me and they matter, and so I want to help him as much as I can with all parts of it, but to grow as a person and as a player and to help him go on and have a fruitful career.

Signing the veteran quarterback to the team is a good sign that the Browns still have faith in Manziel.

In his five games (two starts) last season, Manziel was underwhelming. He produced only 175 passing yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions before ending his season early due to a hamstring injury.

Maybe McCown can help the young quarterback mature on and off the field.
