It’s not a secret that the Philadelphia Phillies are in the beginning stages of what appears to be a long-term rebuilding plan. A rebuilding plan that it seems staff ace Cole Hamels does not want to be a part of.
I just want to win. That’s all. That’s all any competitor wants. And I know it’s not going to happen here.” Hamels told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Wednesday. “This isn’t what I expected. It’s not what the Phillies expected, either. But it’s reality.
Rumors of Hamels being dealt have swirled around the baseball world during the offseason. The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox are among the teams that have reportedly had discussions with Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. about a potential deal for the All-Star starter. However, nothing has come to a head as of yet. Now entering Spring Training, Hamels’ public statement indicates a renewed push on his end to get out of Philadelphia.
This is only magnified by the fact that the starter is constantly checking the Internet for trade rumors surrounding himself.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was checking the internet to see the latest.
With all this said, Nightengale did make sure to indicate that Hamels isn’t requesting a trade. Now entering the final few years of his prime, the starter simply wants to win. And in reality, he doesn’t view Philadelphia as a contender.
Hamels tallied 9-9 record last season, but did post a career-low 2.46 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP in 30 starts. A sign that he’s 100 percent correct about Philadelphia not being in a position to contend, the veteran has a combined 17-23 record over the past two seasons despite posting great splits. If Hamels were to be traded, he would likely find himself as the staff ace on a contending team. At this point in his career, it’s readily apparent that’s what he wants.
