Richard Sherman: I Hope the Patriots Test Me Early

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is one of those players who gets antsy on the field when not part of the action. Even as the top shut-down defensive back in the NFL, Sherman finds himself wanting to see the ball thrown his way more, which is something that doesn’t happen all too often.

This mentality came to the forefront when Sherman was made available to the media after the team landed in Arizona for Super Bowl week.

When asked about whether the New England Patriots will test him early, Sherman simply stated “I don’t know, hopefully.”

That’s a one-liner that most won’t focus on right now, but it just goes to show us that Sherman will not wilt under the pressure of going up against the best quarterback in the modern history of the league. A quarterback that has made great defensive backs look bad over the course of his career.

Speaking more broadly about his game, Sherman wouldn’t declare himself the best cornerback in the league, specifically when asked to compare his game to Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis.

“I don’t measure my game to anybody’s. I don’t have a great answer to that question,” the three-time All-Pro said. “I think my game measures up pretty well to myself.”

When pushed about whether he was the best corner in the game, Sherman stated…

I don’t answer preschool questions. I like journalists…I don’t like people who just throw out dumb questions and try to incite controversy.

Okay, now that’s the Sherman we have come to know.

However, his unwillingness to address the top cornerback question is somewhat of a refreshing turnabout for a player that has in the past challenged other top defensive backs on social media.

If this is the version of Sherman we are going to see during media availability this week, those who “try to incite controversy” won’t be too happy.
