Report: Rams Among Several Teams Interested in Trading for Nick Foles

To say that the St. Louis Rams need to find a long-term solution at quarterback would be a major understatement. This is a team that has been held back by that position ever since Marc Bulger started regressing in 2007.

Since then, it’s been former No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford that has led an uninspiring performance for a Rams team that is 21 games under .500.

So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the Rams are said to be interested in upgrading this position in the offseason.

According to NJ.com, the Rams are among several teams that have shown preliminary interest in acquiring Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles should he be made available.

The report indicates that Foles was a hot topic among coaches and scouts during the Senior Bowl last week, with the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans as two of the teams that would show interest in Foles on the trade market.

By adding St. Louis to the list, another intriguing possibility comes to light.

Foles had a breakout 2013 campaign for the Eagles, putting up 27 touchdowns compared to two interceptions in 13 games (10 starts). Fresh off a performance that saw the former third-round pick lead Philadelphia to the playoffs that season, many expected progression in 2014. Instead, Foles put up a less-than-stellar season prior to missing the final eight-plus games with a collarbone injury. He threw just 13 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions in eight starts.

It remains to be seen whether Philadelphia will put Foles on the block, but it’s readily apparent that Chip Kelly, who gained control of the team’s player personnel department earlier this month, is looking to upgrade at that position. Recent reports have linked Philadelphia to the consensus No. 1 overall prospect in the 2015 NFL draft, former Kelly pupil Marcus Mariota.

As it relates to the Rams’ quarterback position, Austin Davis and Shaun Hill split time under center in 2014. They combined to throw 16 interceptions in a lackluster overall performance.

Coming off a second torn ACL in three seasons, Bradford missed the entire campaign. He’s set to count nearly $17 million against the cap next season, a figure the Rams will definitely get out from under while saving about $10 million against said cap by releasing him.

St. Louis needs a franchise signal caller, and the Eagles may be looking to stockpile picks in an attempt to trade up for Marcus Mariota in April. This makes the potential of a trade real plausible.
