Report: Broncos Hire Wade Phillips to be Defensive Coordinator

New Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has reportedly pulled off quite the hire. According to ESPN insider Ed Werder, the team has hired former NFL head coach Wade Phillips to be its new defensive coordinator.

If the Broncos were going for experience, they succeeded big time here.

A coach in the NFL since 1976, Phillips has been a defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers, and Houston Texans for a total of 23 seasons.

Phillips, who comes from a long line of football coaches, also has experience as a head coach with the Denver Broncos (1993-1994), Buffalo Bills (1998-2000), Atlanta Falcons (2003) and Dallas Cowboys (2007-2010).

His most recent experience came as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans from 2011-2013, during which time Phillips led two top-10 overall defenses.

For the Broncos, it’s a veteran hire that fits well with the team’s win-now mentality, especially with Peyton Manning likely to return in 2015.
