Report: Broncos to Hire Gary Kubiak as New Head Coach

Less than a week after “mutually” parting ways with former head coach John Fox, the Denver Broncos are reportedly bringing in former Houston Texans head man Gary Kubiak to replace Fox.

Not that this is too much of a surprise. Kubiak is close friends with Broncos general manager John Elway, and likely would have only left his role as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator to rejoin his former roommate in Denver. Elway and Kubiak were teammates with the Broncos from 1983-1991.

In selecting Kubiak to be the team’s new head coach, Denver brings in someone who has had a nice amount of recent success in the NFL. Prior to leading an improved Ravens offense this past season, Kubiak served eight years as the Texans head coach. He recorded a 61-64 record in those eight seasons, but was fired following a disastrous two-win 2013 campaign.

Known as an innovative offensive mind, Kubiak’s philosophy doesn’t seem to mesh too well with Elway. The latter had a falling out with John Fox based on schematic differences. Elway prefers a pass-first attack, while Fox had transitioned the Broncos to a run-first scheme in the second half of the 2014 season. Interestingly enough, Kubiak’s offenses have always relied on the run game first.

With that said, Kubiak and Elway should be able to come to some sort of a common ground based on their strong personal relationship.
