Nate Solder on Unlikely TD: “I Blacked Out, Don’t Remember”

New England Patriots offensive tackle Nate Solder became one of the unlikeliest players in AFC Championship game history to score a touchdown on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

With the Patriots up 17-7 in the third quarter and well on the way to blowing the Colts out, Solder reported as eligible on third and one. Instead of handing the ball off to LeGarrette Blount, who destroyed Indianapolis throughout the evening, Tom Brady and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called a play-action pass to Solder.

The result?

For Solder’s part, he doesn’t remember half the play (via The Boston Globe).

I thought, ‘Catch the ball, hold onto it, and don’t fumble it. Had blinders on. I was just going straight ahead, I blacked out. I don’t remember half the play.

Though, the play didn’t catch Solder or the rest of the Patriots by surprise. He indicated after the game that it’s something the team had been working on.
