Doug Marrone Opted Out of Bills Contract to Become Jaguars Offensive Line Coach?

In a clear sign that things were not going too swimmingly in Buffalo as the Bills head coach, Doug Marrone has indeed moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars as the team’s offensive line coach.

This news comes three weeks after Marrone left a $4 million contract for the 2015 season on the table by opting out of his contract in Buffalo. There had been league-wide speculation that the head coach had major issues with Buffalo’s front office, a situation that came to a head when he decided to part ways via a loophole in his contract.

In addition to his role as the Jaguars offensive line coach, Marrone will serve as Gus Bradley’s assistant head coach. While that title adds something to this move, it still has to be seen as a clear demotion for the former Bills head coach.

It could also be an indication that Marrone thought he would get substantial play as a head coach on the open market. With news that the Atlanta Falcons are going to hire Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, all the head coaching vacancies have been filled. So instead of waiting it out for a coordinator job, Marrone decided to head to Jacksonville as a position coach.
