Vernon Davis Tired of Being Invisible in 49ers’ Offense

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who is on track to put up his worst statistical season since 2008, had this to say about his lackluster performance in 2014 (via NFL.com).

For me, it’s all about coming here, showing up and doing what I have to do to contribute. As far as not getting the ball, (I) leave it up to the offensive coordinator. It’s his call.

I look at myself as a playmaker. Not just someone who’s blocking. I enjoy it. I would love to be involved a little bit more. I would love that. That would be amazing. But like I said, it’s out of my control. All I can do is come here, show up and take care of my responsibilities.

Davis certainly has the right to be concerned about his lack of involvement when we look at his numbers this season compared to last year. While it’s fair to say he has dropped a few balls this year, his overall receiving yards to date amount to only 236. Davis’ yards per reception are down to 9.4 and he’s only scored touchdowns.

Last season saw Davis finish with 850 receiving yards and 13 touchdown scores. Davis would have to average about 200 receiving yards and four touchdowns per game over the next three regular season games to play catch up to last year’s numbers. This obviously is a pie in the sky, far-fetched notion.

Under play-caller Greg Roman, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense has been under extreme scrutiny and they currently rank last in offensive points scored since Week 7.

Davis joins running back Frank Gore in his frustrations about playing invisible roles on a team who has been losing and just not scoring a heck of a lot of points these days.

As the regular season winds down, the San Francisco 49ers’ chances of making the playoffs are about as slim as Davis catching up to his stats from 2013.
