New Orleans Saints Prepare to Host a “Funeral” for Atlanta Falcons

This Sunday, NFC South rivals New Orleans Saints (6-8) and Atlanta Falcons (5-9) will battle for a potential division title. A game that could eliminate Atlanta from playoff contention with a loss.

Saints’ cornerback Keenan Lewis had a rather morbid and blunt take on the upcoming game (via NFL.com).

We’re definitely gonna give them their funeral.

Even though Lewis seems prepared to deliver a eulogy after Sunday’s game, players from the Falcons don’t seem to be ruffled by his comments. Falcons’ wide receiver Roddy White even joked back about the comments during a conference call with New Orleans media.

May we rest in peace. I don’t have a response to that because the game is played on Sunday at 12 o’clock. When the ball kicks off and we start to tingle, get it up and mix it around and mingle out there, we’ll see who the better team is at the end of the game. That’s all that’s going to matter.

Wide receiver Harry Douglas brushed off Lewis’ remarks too (via ESPN.com).

Lewis is a great player. He’s a competitor. But it boils down to New Orleans vs. Atlanta. We don’t like them, and they don’t like us. You leave it all out there on Sunday. That’s when I’m going to play the game: on Sunday. I can’t play the game on Wednesday.

Like the Falcons players indicated above, nothing will be decided until the finish of Sunday’s game at the Superdome. Week 1 had the Falcons at home claim victory of the Saints, so of course Lewis and team want to right that wrong in this one.

As it stands in the NFC South, a loss for the Saints and a win for the Carolina Panthers (5-8) this week, could have the Saints preparing their own funeral if things don’t play out in their favor for the remainder of the season.
