Former NFL Running Back Willis McGahee Giving National Rugby League a Try

Former All-Pro running back Willis McGahee, who last played in 2013 with the Cleveland Browns, is apparently planning to try out for the National Rugby Football League.

It is being reported that McGahee will try out for the rugby league when they hold their combine January 12-15 in Los Angeles at the Memorial Coliseum. The league’s website says that the combine focuses on “elite” athletes who have the following qualifications:

  • Willing to make a career change by entering the world of professional rugby/RuXV™
  • Who is currently in top physical condition and base athleticism
  • “cross-over” athletes who have already proven their status in the NFL, NBA, NHL, and NCAA
  • Rugby players on a D1 club side in the U.S.A., Canada, or Tier 1 rugby nation

McGahee, 33,  has quite a sprinkling of experience around the NFL since being drafted in 2003 by the Buffalo Bills. Playing for the Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos and lastly the Cleveland Browns. McGahee earned a total of 2,095 carries, amounting to 8,474 yards and 65 touchdowns. McGahee also put up two Pro Bowl campaigns.

Good luck to McGahee as he trains and gets in tip-top shape to prepare for the January combine, which is obviously even a more difficult task during the holiday season of all times.
