Jay Gruden Has Some Interesting Comments Regarding Robert Griffin III

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden made the decision on Wednesday to bench former No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III in favor of veteran backup Colt McCoy.

The decision in and itself isn’t a major surprise considering how poorly RGIII has performed on the football field since a surprising rookie campaign in 2012. Instead, the surprising aspect of this decision is just how candid Gruden has been in publicly criticizing the quarterback.

Now following the benching, comes this dandy from the first-year head coach.

In no way is that a ringing endorsement for RGIII in the nation’s capital.

It also makes us wonder whether the young qurterback will be back with the team next season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated on Tuesday following his report that Washington was benching RGIII that the team didn’t necessarily view this is the end for the quarterback in D.C.

Washington is planning to start Colt McCoy over Robert Griffin III on Sunday at Indianapolis, per a team source.
While Griffin is not a part of Washington’s plan for Sunday’s game, he still appears to be a significant part of the Redskins’ long-term plan, per another source.

With a head coach so openly willing to criticize RGIII, it will be interesting to see how he responds to the latest setback in a career that started out with a bang. And to be honest, that could very well help Gruden and the Redskins come to their decision regarding his future with the team.

Though, the comments Gruden made in his most recent presser don’t seem to be representative of a head coach that’s willing to go back to RGIII at any time soon.
