Everth Cabrera Charged with Resisting Arrest, Possession of Marijuana

San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera has been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past year-plus. According to the Associated Press, the veteran infielder was charged with resisting arrest stemming from an incident back in September in which he was stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana (h/t ESPN.com).

The 27-year-old Cabrera faces up to one year in jail if convicted. According to the San Diego County district attorney’s office, he was also cited for position of marijuana, which carries just a $100 fine.

Upon the release of this information, the Padres issued a statement.

We are deeply troubled by the charges filed today against Everth Cabrera. We will defer to the judicial system to resolve the legal aspects of this case. As it relates to his future with the Padres, we will make a determination in the near future.

In case you don’t remember, Cabrera was suspended the final 50 games of the 2013 season for his role in the biogenesis scandal. After an All-Star 2013 campaign, the weak-hitting shortstop posted a .232 average in 90 games this past season.

His days in Southern California could now very well be numbered.
