Tony Romo Forced From Game with Back Injury

In sight no football fan wants to see, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was helped off the field against the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

The injury occurred in the third quarter when Romo took a knee to the area of the back that he had surgery on this past offseason. There is no update on Romo’s condition, but backup quarterback Brandon Weeden replaced Romo in the lineup.

Romo was down on the field and not moving for a few minutes before members of the Cowboys medical staff helped him off the field and into the locker room for further examination.

Hopefully the news ends up being good for the first-place Cowboys, who simply can’t afford to miss their franchise quarterback for an extended period of time.

We will have updated information as it becomes available.

Update (10:50 pm et): ESPN is reporting that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there is a chance Romo will return to action. That report came early in the fourth quarter. Though, it would be a minor miracle to see the quarterback on the field after the scene just minutes ago.

Update (11:13 pm et): Romo returned to the game with the team’s tied at 17 and less than two minutes remaining.

Update (11:57 pm et): Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett announced after the team’s overtime loss that X-rays taken on Romo’s back were negative and he will get more tests on Tuesday.
