Report: Rangers Hire Jeff Banister as Manager

Fresh off one of the worst seasons in franchise history, the Texas Rangers have clearly moved on from the Ron Washington days with their latest hire.

According to Fox Sports’ insider Ken Rosenthal, Texas has hired former Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister to take over the fledgling team.

Banister, who has no MLB managerial experience, has spent the last four seasons as the bench coach in Pittsburgh. And during those four years, Pittsburgh saw the greatest turnaround in franchise history. It lost 105 games in 2010, only to win 94 games in 2013 and earn two consecutive trips to the playoffs.

The 49-year-old Oklahoma native appeared in one game as a player for the Pirates back in 1991, recording a hit in his only at-bat. He previously coached and managed in the Pirates minor league system.
