Lions’ WR Calvin Johnson May Sit a While

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was inactive for the team’s Week 6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. And now, it appears that he might be out for an extended period of time.

When asked if they would consider sitting Johnson until after their Week 9 bye, Lions head coach Jim Caldwell had this to say (via ESPN).

I do not hold a medical degree. It may appear I do from time to time to you maybe, but I don’t,” Caldwell said. “The fact of the matter is I leave it up to the doctors. Those are the professionals. They know exactly what it takes. Them in conjunction with Calvin and how he feels, they treat not only symptoms of the situation but also the patient as well in terms of how he feels. So they’ll let us know what’s the best path to take.

By not answering the question directly, Caldwell left open the possibility that Johnson could miss Detroit’s next two games against the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.

While Detroit did handle Minnesota 17-3 on Sunday, quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for less than 200 yards for only the seventh time in his career. Now going up against better offenses in New Orleans and Atlanta, the Lions are going to have to score some more points in order to continue winning.

If Johnson is inactive in these two games, the onus will be on Golden Tate to play well. He has recorded a team high 38 receptions for nearly 500 yards through six games.
