Kirk Cousins Benched for Colt McCoy

The Washington Redskins are now at the point where Colt McCoy is considered an upgrade over their current starter. The team benched Kirk Cousins in favor of the veteran backup down by four points against the Tennessee Titans early in the third quarter.

Cousins had completed 10-of-16 passes for 139 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception prior to being benched in favor of McCoy. The former Michigan State standout has struggled a great deal since a breakout Week 2 performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

At 1-5, Washington’s season is on the brink here. And it makes perfect sense to look for some type of a lift from someone other than Cousins.

Head coach Jay Gruden has indicated that Robert Griffin III will start when he’s healthy and ready to go. He returned to practice this past week, but still isn’t expected back until after Washington’s bye in the middle of next month.

Until then, it might be all Colt McCoy all the time.

In some good news, McCoy threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon on his first pass attempt of the game.
