High School Football Player Dies After Hit During Game

Jamond Salley of Park View High School in South Hill, Va. died  after being hit during their game on Friday night. This news comes from WRIC, a local ABC affiliate in Virginia.

Around 8:10 p.m. Jamond Salley, a junior at Park View Senior High School, received medical attention on the sidelines of a game between his school and Brunswick High School on October 17.

Salley’s medical condition deteriorated, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. After becoming unconscious, he started having seizures and rescue personnel began CPR on him.

Salley was transported to Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill; soon after, he was pronounced dead.

It’s yet another incident of a high school football player passing away due to the violence of contact on the football field. While one death is too many, this has become too prevalent around the United States as it relates to amateur football. It also adds fuel to the idea that the risk of playing football while still developing as a young man is simply not worth it.

Even prior to Salley’s death, there were other incidents around high school football that should raise some eyebrows.

Tom Cutinella of Shoreham-Wading River High School in New York died earlier this month after colliding with another player (via Sports Illustrated).

That came on the heels of another player, Noah Cornuet of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, passing away during conditioning drills back in August.

Our thoughts go out to Salley’s family, the local community and Park View High School.
