Jonathan Dwyer Placed on NFI, Cardinals to Pay Full Salary

Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was released from jail early Thursday morning on $25,000 bond after being charged with assault in two different incidents involving a 27-year-old woman and his 18-month old son.

Immediately after Dwyer’s arrest, Arizona deactivated him from its 53-man roster, which is obviously an indication that he will not suit up for the team while the legal process plays out.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport just now reported on NFL Network that Arizona will place Dwyer on the NFI (Non-Football Injury List) and will pay his entire salary for the 2014 season. As the Rapoport pointed out, the team had the choice to strip Dwyer of his entire salary with this designation. As reported, the injury is said to be of the mental variety. This adds an entirely new dimension to the situation.

While we shouldn’t read too much into this, it’s a rather interesting development. Based on the crimes that Dwyer is being charged with, one of which includes assault on an 18-month old child, it’s surprising that the team would agree to pay his full salary while he awaits trial on the charges.
