Oakland A’s Official: Rally Possum Can Stay

When an opossum showed up at O.co coliseum in Oakland for the A’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday evening, I originally thought it was a sewer rat. After all, that would have been par for the course in that run-down stadium. It just so happened that the opossum acted as good luck for the A’s, who ended up defeating Tampa Bay shortly after his/her arrival in the outfield.

And A’s players took a liking to what is now being called the “rally possum.” It even got to the point where recently acquired starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija jokingly indicated that the A’s should name the opossum.

Now comes this quote from A’s officals (via TMZ.com).

Reps for the team tell TMZ Sports, “We’re undefeated since he showed up, and have no intention of getting rid of him.” The rep says they won’t call Animal Control on RP … unless it starts procreating like crazy.

I am not too sure what would be wrong with an entire opossum family taking up residence at O.co. At the very least, they could distract Justin Verlander and David Price when the Detroit Tigers come for their annual postseason visit to Oakland. The plan could be to send one of the family members to the hump maybe to gnaw on Verlander’s ankle as he goes to pitch. Nothing could go wrong there.
