Matt Cain Likely to Undergo Elbow Surgery, Miss Rest of 2014 Season

This is potentially a huge blow for the San Francisco Giants’ playoff hopes. According to manager Bruce Bochy, odds are that starting pitcher Matt Cain will not pitch again this season (via MLB.com).

If you’re putting odds on it, odds are going to be that he will not pitch.

Luckily for Cain and the Giants, it’s unlikely that Cain will have to undergo Tommy John Surgery, which means that he should be available to start the 2015 season. However, the three-time All-Star will have to undergo surgery to in order to clean up some bone chips in his right elbow. Bochy indicated that the team will give Cain a window to decide when to go under the knife.

This will give him the weekend to decide who’s going to do [the surgery] and when.

San Francisco had to have seen this coming after it acquired veteran Jake Peavy from the Boston Red Sox. It’s still a major blow to the team’s playoff hopes. Cain was struggling prior to the injury, going 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts this season. With that said, he was an important cog in two World Series champion teams and it seems that the issue with his elbow impacted Cain’s ability to make a stronger impact this year.

The Giants are currently two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and hold the top wildcard spot.
