According to Jon Heyman over at CBS Sports, the Boston Red Sox have discussed dealing ace Jon Lester to the Los Angeles Dodgers. While no deal seems imminent at this point, Heyman points out that Los Angeles has the ammunition to get a potential deal done.
The Dodgers have several talented outfielders, which is Boston’s biggest need. They include center field prospect Joc Pederson and longtime Dodgers star Matt Kemp, who’s having an off year and seems more than open to a trade.
Whether Boston would be willing to take on Kemp’s contract is another question altogether. The idea of swapping a staff ace for a veteran outfielder that is struggling this season cannot seem too appealing to the Red Sox, who are struggling themselves this year.
Currently 48-57 and in last place in the AL East, the Red Sox could very well become sellers prior to the deadline on Thursday. With Lester being their biggest chip, it makes sense that he would be involved in potential discussions with contending teams.
Lester, who is 10-7 with a 2.52 ERA in 2014, is a free agent following this season.
The veteran lefty has indicated that he would be willing to re-sign with the Red Sox, even if they trade him this year (via CSN New England).
If the Red Sox are able to acquire Lester and a highly-regards prospect for losing Lester for the remainder of the 2014 season, it would be a mini coup for the team. The two sides have been unable to come to an agreement on a long-term contract. Heyman reported earlier this month that Boston may be willing to up its offer to Lester on a long-term deal to $100 million over five seasons. Lester turned down a four-year, $70 million extension during spring training.
The Dodgers boast one of the best starting rotations in baseball with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke as their top two pitchers. Adding Lester to the mix would go a long way in determining who wins the NL West.
