Browns to Name a Starting Quarterback; Josh Gordon Won’t Be Cut

The Cleveland Browns don’t yet know who their starting quarterback will be, but they did indicate a timetable for which they plan to make that decision.

Head coach Mike Pettine told reporters at the Akron Beacon Journal that a starting quarterback will be announced by the third week of the preseason; or perhaps before that. Pettine said that he would be meeting with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterback’s coach Dowell Loggains to come up with a plan on splitting the first-team reps between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel for training camp.

This is quite a change in the drift from when Pettine said Hoyer will be the starter and Manziel is the designated backup.

Pettine also had these comments to share regarding the status of wide receiver Josh Gordon, who faces a possible year-long suspension.

No, we’re firm. We want to find that middle ground. Josh is a Cleveland Brown. We want to do what’s best for him. We have a player that potentially needs help. Whether it’s him or whether it’s anybody else that wears the uniform, if we can help, we’ll help.

We want to make our decisions always, what’s best for the player, and you try to marry it with what’s best for the team. So that’s why I don’t think that cutting him, while it may have worked for some other people, I don’t know if that’s the necessarily the best option here. It might be the worst option for both — for us and for him. We’re going to wait and see what happens and then act accordingly.

Gordon’s appeal hearing takes place next month and a decision regarding the outcome should follow within 10-14 days. Right now, there is no indication on exactly long Gordon could be banned.

Regarding the starting quarterback, my bet is that they go all in with Manziel.
