San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde Looking Good

When the San Francisco 49ers exhausted a second-round pick on former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde back in May, there were many who concluded it was one of the steals of the draft. Despite being at a position that is already considered a strength, Hyde’s down-hill running ability seemed to fit the 49ers’ scheme to a T.

There are now indications from Santa Clara that Hyde is looking every bit the part of a steal (via ESPN.com).

The running back (Hyde) has shined out of the backfield as a runner and as receiver. The Ohio State product is likely to get a chance at playing time right away. He was considered a steal at No. 57 on draft night and is still looking like one.

With Frank Gore likely on his last legs and LaMichael James potentially on the outs in San Francisco, there could be room for Hyde to make an immediate impact as a rookie in 2014. It will, however, be extremely difficult with Kendall Hunter and Marcus Lattimore as his prime competition behind Gore heading into training camp.

It now remains to be seen whether Hyde will earn the No. 2 running back job. If so, you can expect him to help take the burden off an aging Gore and build a fearsome backfield in the NFC West.
