Bennett Brothers Speak up For Seahawks’ Marshawn Lynch

Seattle Seahawks’ Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch is seriously considering retirement if he doesn’t receive higher pay. Pass rusher Michael Bennett of the Seahawks, who hopes the standoff ends quickly, speaks on Lynch’s behalf.

Michael Bennett had this to say regarding Lynch (via NFL AM).

Come back, Marshawn, come back! We need you. Without Marshawn, we wouldn’t win a Super Bowl. Obviously he’s one of the best running backs in the game, and he feels like he should be paid like one of the best backs in the game. And, of course, I agree with him. I mean, for a guy to take those kind of hits in the NFL and continue to do it at a high level?

Martellus Bennett, who is a tight end for the Chicago Bears, concurred with his brother.

The way that running backs are treated in the league nowadays, until they get some leverage, they gotta try and get paid again, because they’ll be out before you know it. It’s almost as if in the NFL, as soon as you have a good year, you gotta ask for a pay raise — because as soon as you have a bad year, they ask for a pay cut.

Lynch, who is entering into his eight year in the NFL, has been highly productive his past three seasons with the Seahawks, tallying up over 4,000 rush yards and 35 touchdowns during that span. However, Lynch might be fighting a losing battle since the Seahawks have other running back options in Robert Turbin and Christine Michael. Turbin is starting his third year in the NFL and Michael just got through his rookie season. For what it’s worth, Michael has been receiving rave reviews around the football world this offseason.

The burning question here is will Lynch hold out and actually stay true to his retirement claims if he doesn’t see more money? It sounds like the Seahawks are playing hardball for now, and don’t play to cave at this time.
