Report: Miami Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez Likely to Require Season-Ending Surgery

Stud Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez, who had been on the fast track to earning a first Cy Young Award, will likely miss the remainder of the season after a second opinion indicated a serious elbow injury.

The 21-year-old starting pitcher currently leads all of baseball with 70 strikeouts in eight starts. He’s posted a 16-8 record with a 2.25 ERA and 0.971 WHIP in 36 career starts.

If Fernandez undergoes Tommy John Surgery, which is a likelihood at this point, he will join numerous young pitchers that have had to undergo the very same procedure in recent months. Matt Harvey, Jarrod Parker and Matt Moore, among others, are also shelved for the season.
